The researchers analysed the effects of the 3 NSAIDs (Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs) on fertility.
Women have been cautioned against taking drugs for painful periods and back pain as it could cause infertility.
A new study revealed that drugs such asnaproxen, diclofenac, ibuprofenandaspirinwhich are largely used for the treatment of pain, inflammation, painful periods and fever can reduce a woman's fertility.
The researchers analyzed the effects of the 3NSAIDs(Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs) on fertility.
As part of the study, painkiller study investigator,Prof. Sami Salman,of the University of Baghdad, Iraq recruited 39 women of childbearing age who suffer from back pain to take part in the study.
The women receiveddiclofenac(100mg once daily),naproxen(500mg twice daily) andetoricoxib(90mg once daily) or aplacebo.
The drugs were given 10 days after the beginning of their menstrual cycle, the first day of a woman's period.
Researchers tested whether the women had ovulated by analyzing the level of the hormone progesterone, via a blood sample. They also measured the diameter of the dominant follicle, a fluid-filled cavity in the ovaries that contains one undeveloped egg, using ultrasonography,a form of ultrasound.
The team found that of the women receivingNSAIDs, only 6.3% of those takingdiclofenacovulated, and only 25% of women takingnaproxenand 27.3% takingetoricoxibovulated.
This was compared with 100% of women in the control group, who were not taking medication.
Based on the findingsSalman said:
"After just 10 days of treatment we saw a significant decrease in progesterone, a hormone essential for ovulation, across all treatment groups, as well as functional cysts in one third of patients. These findings show that even short-term use of these popular, over-the-counter drugs could have a significant impact on a women's ability to have children."
Also doctors said the risk of reduced fertility associated with the drugs, must be communicated to women regularly taking the medication.

GOODNEWS: P’Harcourt refinery to commence operations in July – NNPC
The Port Harcourt Refining Company Limited will start refining crude oil and will contribute to petroleum product availability by the end of this month, the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation has said.
It also assured that on or before the end of this week, the scarcity of Premium Motor Spirit, otherwise known as petrol, will cease across the country.
The Group Managing Director, NNPC, Dr. Joseph Dawha, disclosed this in Abuja on Thursday after inspecting some petrol stations in the city.
He said, "Presently, the refineries are undergoing rehabilitation and we are undertaking what we call a new strategy to carry out the turn around maintenance on them. Basically, what this means is that we are carrying out phased implementation of rehabilitation of the refineries.
"We are taking the refineries unit by unit and carrying out turnaround maintenance on them. So in other words, the maintenance are being carried out on the run and we started a couple of months ago.
"Most of the refineries have advanced to a certain stage where they will be able to operate very soon. For example, the Port Harcourt refinery, which has reached an advanced stage, will start receiving crude by end of this month and then of course will start contributing to the available products in the country."
NNPC has four refineries, two in Port Harcourt, and one each in Kaduna and Warri. The refineries have a combined installed capacity of 445,000 barrels per day. A comprehensive network of pipelines and depots strategically located throughout Nigeria link these refineries.
Dawha said the maintenance exercise on the refineries were spontaneously taking place in all the facilities.
He said, "At the end of the target 18 months, most of the refineries would have been rehabilitated to such level where they can actually process crude optimally to make contributions to the availability of products in the country.
"I've heard some people say we have neglected the refineries, no, farther from that. We hope that at the end of the exercise, these refineries will be fully back into operation and we will minimise some of the problems we have with importation."
He explained that why the refineries were not running was a conscious decision, adding that "we decided that if the refineries were not in good state to process crude for maximum gain, then there was no point sending crude to the refineries.
"Therefore what you do is to try and fix it so that by the time you start processing the crude, you will get real value for the crude you are sending to the refineries. We are satisfied with the level of work that has been carried out so far in the Port Harcourt refinery, so that if you start processing crude now you will get real value."
The Managing Director, Pipelines Product Marketing Company, Mr. Haruna Momoh, stated that the NNPC imports 50 per cent of petroleum products into the country.
He noted that when the ongoing rehabilitation and turn around maintenance of the Port Harcourt refinery is completed in July, 2015, the plant would run at 80 per cent installed capacity and produce five million litres of petrol on a daily basis.
Meanwhile, Dawha called on marketers to start importing PMS, stressing that the distribution challenge of PMS was largely due to the non-involvement of marketers, a development which resulted in the scarcity nationwide.
The NNPC GMD said as of Thursday, the PPMC had a stock level of 1.1 billion litres, representing 27 days sufficiency, and noted that the stock excludes volumes with confirmed delivery dates within the next couple of days.
"In the last five days, we have brought into Abuja 428 trucks of Premium Motor Spirit, averaging 85 trucks daily, to address the petrol requirement in Abuja and its immediate environs," Dawha added.

Barcelona beat Juventus 3-1 to lift fifth Champions League title
Barcelona won the Champions League for the fourth time in a decade on Saturday, with Luis Suarez grabbing the crucial goal in a 3-1 victory over Juventus at the end of a season that began with the Uruguay striker serving a ban for biting.
The $110-million recruit from Liverpool scored Barcelona's second in the 68th minute after Lionel Messi's shot was palmed away by goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon.
Neymar had a goal disallowed for handball but, with the final going into a seventh minute of stoppage time, the Brazil striker found time to score again. This time it counted.
Ivan Rakitic had sent Barcelona into a fourth-minute lead, but the Spanish champions failed to build on their early dominance before Juventus leveled 10 minutes into the second half through Alvaro Morata.
Juventus, though, couldn't prevent Barcelona from collecting the European Cup for the fifth time as the formidable Messi-Neymar-Suarez front three took their goal tally to 122 this season.
The triumph comes after four years without success in European competition and ensures both coach Luis Enrique and Suarez end their first season with the club with a treble.
Juventus initially looked like it could cause an upset against the most dominant team in Europe in the modern era. Assertive from kick off, Juventus made Barcelona look anxious initially. It didn't last long — just four minutes, in fact.
In a move that involved all 10 outfield players touching the ball, starting with Jordi Alba's throw in, Barcelona took the lead.
So often the provider of goals, Messi delivered a precise cross-field pass in the goalward advance. It landed at the feet of Jordi Alba, who played in Neymar and the ball was then slipped through to Andres Iniesta.
With a flick, Iniesta squared for Rakitic to power into the net from close range past Buffon.
The expectation was that Barcelona would take a stranglehold on the final.
Had it not been for Buffon's stretching save at the start of the second half to deny Suarez, Juventus would have been two behind. Messi, for once, also couldn't find the target after a one-two with Suarez.
It proved costly. A back-heel from Claudio Marchisio began the move that led to Juve's equalizer.
An initial shot from Carlos Tevez was parried by Marc-Andre ter Stegen. But Morata, who scored in both legs of the semifinal against former club Real Madrid, sent the follow-up into the net with ease.
Juve didn't use the opportunity to swing the final in their favor, and Barca were back in front 13 minutes later after launching an electrifying counterattack
Within five minutes of Suarez's goal, Barca were celebrating again — but the joy was short-lived. Neymar was spotted to have headed the ball onto his arm before it went past Buffon.
But Neymar did have the final say in this final with the late goal.

I’ll never help people again ─ Suspect
Richard Utubor, the 35-year-old man arrested by the Lagos police after a lady he picked up from the road died in his apartment, has said he would never assist people again.
Utubor, an indigene of Igueben, Edo State, was arrested in the Baruwa Estate, Ipaja area of Lagos State, on Saturday after taking the victim home on Friday.
PUNCHMetrohad reported that the suspect had taken the deceased home after she asked him for financial help.
A police source had told our correspondent that the duo was making love, when the victim died.
A neighbor was said to have alerted the police and Utubor was subsequently arrested.
Utubor, who had been transferred to the State Department of Criminal Investigation, Yaba, denied having intercourse with the victim.
He said, "I was at School bus stop, Abesan Estate, around 10.30pm when the woman, who was about 40 years old, asked me for financial help. She asked for N200.
"I told her I had only N50 on me. She knelt down begging me to assist her, and saying she would follow me to wherever I was going, just to collect the money.
"At that point, I agreed to assist her with the N200 she wanted. She followed me to my house, which was not far from the bus stop. When I got home, I opened the door, while she stood outside.
"Just as I was about to enter, she complained of a headache. Before I came out from the room with the N200, she had slumped and I immediately called my younger brother and neighbors to assist me. Before I knew it, she was dead."
Utubor said he regretted taking the victim to his apartment, adding that he did it in good faith because he had a "giving spirit."
The Ordinary National Diploma graduate of Public Administration swore that if he got out of the trouble, he would never render assistance to people again.
He said, "I just rented a room and parlour apartment on David Ogunsanya Street because I will be getting married in December this year. I did my traditional wedding during the Easter celebration.
"I did not have sex with her. I did not even give her water or food. If God gets me out of this, I will not help people again in my life."
He said when he picked the victim from the road, she did not have any means of identification on her and that she only wore her clothes and a pair of slippers.
Utubor, who is the eldest in a family of five children, said he did not bother to ask for her name because he had no ulterior motive.
"She had no phone, handbag or anything to indicate her identity except a rapper and the dress she had on her. What I just noticed was that immediately she slumped, she was foaming in the mouth.
"I did not take her home to sleep with her. That was why I did not bother to ask for her name or where she was coming from or going to," he added.
A police source, however, said when Utubor was arrested, he was half naked.
